Understanding the relevant terminology conveys a professional attitude to customers. 1. Synthetic resin refers to a class of polymers synthesized artificially. It exists as a viscous liquid or a heat-softenable solid, typically exhibiting a melting or softening temperature range when heated, and can assume a plastic flow state under the action of external forces. Some of its properties resemble those of natural resins. 2. The most important application of synthetic resins is the production of plastics. To facilitate processing and improve performance, additives are often incorporated, and sometimes the resin is used directly for processing; thus, "synthetic resin" is frequently synonymous with "plastic." 3. General-purpose resin refers to plastics that are produced in large volumes, have wide application ranges, exhibit good moldability, and are inexpensive. There are five major varieties of general-purpose resins. 4. Plastic modification means adding a certain amount of additives, fillers, and other components to general-purpose resins to enhance their functions or improve their performance characteristics.
